Bob Arum describes Mike Jones as the ‘sensational welterweight from Philadelphia.”

Russell Peltz, who promotes Jones, says the unbeaten welterweight “..has a chance to become a world champion.”

Jones, 20-0-0, will take on Hector ‘Hurricane’ Munoz, 18-2-1, on the KELLY PAVLIK vs. Sergio Martinez world title fight card April 17 at the historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

“There are a lot of good prospects right now in Philadelphia — Danny Garcia, Derrick Ennis, Teon Kennedy —  but I think Mike is as good as any of them,” said Peltz.  “He has the potential to be a world champion once all of his skills come to the surface.

“He works as hard as any fighter I have ever promoted.  In fact, sometimes he works too hard and we have to tell him to slow down–100 situps, 100 pushups, 8-10 rounds sparring, running, going away to camp for a month.

“Some people look at Mike and see a young Thomas Hearns because of his back and his overall size, 6-feet, 147 pounds.  Though he is still learning, he reminds me more of a cross between Bobby “Boogaloo” Watts and Willie “The Worm” Monroe, two of the best middleweights anywhere in the 1970s.

“I’d like to see Mike get some more seasoning this year before getting in there with guys like Andre Berto.  I’d like to see him in there with ALFONSO GOMEZ, JESUS SOTO-KARASS, Carlos Abregu, Freddy Hernandez, Ed Paredes, Antwun Smith.

“Let’s find out  just who is the best prospect at 147 pounds.,” Peltz said.

Jones vs. Munoz will box for the NABA, NABO welterweight titles. They will step into the ring just before the Pavlik vs. Martinez world middleweight fight gets underday.  Pavlik vs. Martinez is promoted by Top Rank, DiBella Entertainment and hosted by Caesars Atlantic City.
