WBC Champion Andy Vences to Participate in Watsonville Reading Rally with the Warriors

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Santa Cruz Warriors announced ten more “Read to Achieve” events taking place next week, presented by Kaiser Permanente.

This round of visits will be highlighted by a collaboration between WBC Champion Andy Vences and Warriors players, Elgin Cook and Terrence Drisdom, at Starlight Elementary School in Watsonville. Vences, a Watsonville native, is an undefeated Super Featherweight and WBC Continental Junior Lightweight Champion. At Starlight, Vences and the Warriors will talk to students about the importance of reading and the roles that education has played in their own lives. They will also spend time shooting hoops with the students after the assemblies, and will round out their visit by reading to the school’s kindergarten classes.

The Warriors’ fifth season of Read to Achieve presented by Kaiser Permanente launched on Jan. 30, with over 4,200 students participated in “Reading Rallies” across Santa Cruz County. This year’s program will reach over 7,000 students in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties over the next two months through the addition of select expansion schools and events throughout the Central Coast.

Each year, all Santa Cruz Warriors players and coaches participate in the program as “Read to Achieve” Captains. Each player and coach are partnered with a Santa Cruz County school and make three visits to each school beginning in January and continuing through April. The players and coaches will continue to participate in reading rallies, school assemblies, and basketball clinics to create excitement around reading. Students at each school earn prizes such as bookmarks, pencil cases, bobbleheads, and Santa Cruz Warriors and Golden State Warriors tickets as they achieve new milestones in reading.
