As Pavlik -Martinez Fight Nears, Interest Intensifies

The fight on Sat., April 17, between middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik and Argentine challenger Sergio Martinez is generating intense interest from the media. Here's a round-up of three stories:

NY Daily News reporter Mitch Abramson writes: "There was a time when Kelly Pavlik was the omnipresent ambassador of boxing. After his win against Jermain Taylor in 2007, Pavlik stumped for Hillary Clinton in the Ohio Democratic Primary; he threw out the first pitch for a Cleveland Inidans playoff game; Pavlik even spoke to Ohio State before it played Michigan in a college football game."

The AP's Dave Skretta, quoting Martinez promoter Lou DiBella, writes: "This is a matchup that's about as good as it gets," DiBella said. "Kelly didn't have to take this fight--he could have taken another route--but he took the toughest guy who wanted to face him. It's going to be a great fight."

Jake Donovan writes at BoxingScene.com: "Raise your hand if you remember the last middleweight title fight you were actually looking forward to see. Let me lend you a friendly assist; if you have any standards whatsoever, then that last moment came more than 2 ½ years ago. It was when an undefeated contender named Kelly Pavlik peeled himself off of the canvas early to rally back and violently snatch the middleweight crown from the reigning undefeated champion, Jermain Taylor."
