Jones Returns After a Two-Year Hiatus

Atlantic City -- After a two-year layoff, welterweight Mike Jones of Philadelphia returns to the ring here at Bally's Park Place with a new team of trainers Saturday, August 23rd.

Jones (26-1, 19 KOs) will take on Jaime Herrera (11-2-1, 6 KOs) of Franklin Park, Illinois in the 10-round main event.

Jones has been training for over a year at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas. He team now includes Ismael Salas - who cornered Jessie Vargas of Las Vegas in his two world title fights - Miguel Diaz, and Richie Sandoval.

Salas said: "Boxing is a mental game just as much as a physical one. When we first worked with Mike for this fight, we talked for a long time and worked on renewing his fighting spirit. He is a great fighter, and he needs to think that when he walks into the ring, he will be a powerful force. Mike is very strong and hits hard. He is in top condition. Just look at him. After two years off, you will see what hard work and mental toughness did for Mike. He's ready to fight."

Salas has had 10 world champions, the latest being Jessie Vargas of Las Vegas. Salas has also trained Yuriorkis Gamboa but was not with Gamboa during his recent title fight against Terence Crawford.

Jones sparred earlier at the Top Rank Gym with Japan's Olympic middleweight gold medalist Ryota Murata.

First bell is 5:30 pm Saturday night. Peltz Boxing is promoting.
