Chavez Jr. and Barrera Fighting For More Than Victory

05/28/2010

History looms large over undefeated Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. and three-time world champion Marco Antonio Barrera's upcoming fights at the Alomodome on Saturday, June 26, part of the most ambitious and compelling entry in the popular "Latin Fury" series.

For Chavez Jr., of Sinaloa, Mexico, who is taking on middleweight contender John Duddy of Derry, Ireland, it's a more personal history: In 1993, his legendary father fought Pernell Whitaker to a draw at the Alomodome in front of 60,000 fans.

"I am very happy to be coming back to San Antonio for this, the most important fight of my career," Chavez Jr. said during a press conference at the Alomodome for the event being promoted by Top Rank, Promociones Zanfer and Tecate beer. "My father had one of his biggest fights here, and this city is very special to our family. I hope the fans come out and support us on June 26."

For Marco Antonio Barrera (68-7, 43), of Mexico City, his fight against Adilson de Jesus (25-4, 20 KOs) of Bahia, Brazil, will bring him one step closer to an achivement no other Mexican fighter, including Chavez Jr.'s father, has achieved. Hence Barrera's intense training regimen in Guadalajara.

"I want to win a fourth world title in a fourth diferent division," said Barrera, whose 10-round ligthweight battle with de Jesus is the event's co-feature. "With the help of Juan Carlos Torres and Top Rank, I hope to do it this year. This fight is the start towards that goal."

Todd Duboef, president of Top Rank, and Fernando Beltran, president of Zanfer Promotions, led the press conference.  Said Duboef, "We have great respect for the Mexican boxing fans, and we hope that they enjoy this card. They will see a future champion in Chavez Jr. and one of the all-time greats in Barrera. It should a night of great action here at the Alamodome."

Tickets for the show are priced at $200, $100, $60, $40 and $25 and are available at the Alamodome Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, online via Ticketmaster.com, and by phone at 800 745-3000.
