Chavez Jr. Receives Middleweight Belt

On June 4th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. won the middleweight title in a good old fashioned brawl with former champ Sebastian Zbik. It was Chavez Jr.’s first championship win.

“I am very proud to be the first Mexican to win a WBC world middleweight title,” said Chavez Jr. today during a presentation ceremony in Mexico City.

The fight with Zbik marked a major step up in competition for the Freddie Roach-trained Chavez Jr., whose biggest victory came when he crushed popular Irish bruiser John Duddy in San Antonio’s Alomodome last year.

“I remember going with my dad to this very same ceremony when he won his title,” said Chavez Jr., “and I was very proud of him. Today is my turn.”
