Concepcion Vows to Take Juanma's Belt

After a few days here in Puerto Rico, world-ranked challenger Bernabe Concepcion is almost ready to get into the ring with Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez this Saturday at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico. Dubbed "The Challenge," the upcoming battle is a world championship fight promoted by Top Rank and PR Best Boxing Promotions. It will be telecast live on Showtime.

"I am almost there," said Concepcion yesterday during a media workout at the Wilfredo Gomez Gym in Guaynabo. "I will be set to go on Saturday. I have worked very hard to be ready for this fight, and the next few days is just about putting the final touches on my training.."

Concepcion is a strong fighter whose clash with WBO featherweight championship Lopez marks the Filipino's second shot at a world title.

Said Concepcion: "I know that I have to be at my best to defeat Lopez--and I will be. If people think he looked good at 126 pounds, I will too. There are no secrets here between us. He is coming to fight and so am I. This one will be a war."

Concepcion trained hard for 90 minutes under the watchful eye of Bubboy Fernandez, the good friend and corner man of seven-time world champ Manny Pacquiao.

"It's going to be a tough fight for both us," Concepcion went on. "I don't care that he is home. I come to win and to take the belt home. That's why we work so hard for this fight."

Eden Sonsona also workout today. Sonsona is taking on Jonathan Oquendo in another Filipino vs. Puerto Rico duel on Saturday night. In an ironic twist, Sonsona, who is a lefty like Lopez, has been the main sparing partner for righty Concepcion. Right-handed Oquendo, on the other hand, has been the main sparring mate for Lopez.
