Duddy in a Must-Win Situation, Say Irish Boxing Writers

08/13/2010 John Duddy enters the ring with the weight of an entire country's expectations on his shoulders. He has an impressive record and a tremendous following, including in his adopted home of New York, and now the native of Derry, Ireland wants a title shot. As a result, his battle tomorrow in the Alamodome with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is a tipping point. If he wins, Duddy is likely to land just such an opportunity. If he loses, well, he's doubtlessly not even considering the prospect.

The importance of this fight for Duddy isn't lost on boxing analysts. Writing at the Belfast Telegraph, David Kelly opines: "Now the Derry man enters the lion's den against Chavez knowing he is going to need the performance of his career to overcome the 24 year old." In a piece headlined "Time for Duddy to Stand and Deliver," the Derry Journal's Simon Collins declares: "As far as defining moments go, the stage has now been set for Derry's world middleweight title contender, John Duddy, to step into the breach and earn his place in Irish boxing folklore." And Kevin McLauglin, of the Londonderry Sentinel, quotes Duddy's father as saying: "This is the big chance we have been waiting for because we know if John wins he'll get his crack at a world title...."
