Jason Moloney Q&A
When did you start boxing and why?
I started boxing at age 13. I originally started boxing to help me get fit for AFL (Australian rules football). I wanted to be a professional footballer and I thought boxing may help give me an edge in fitness.
What is your first memory in the sport?
When I was around 10 years old somebody bought myself and my twin brother Andrew a pair of boxing gloves each. We were always super competitive and we would put the gloves on, make a ring in the lounge room and we would fight for hours! Things would always get out of hand and we ended up with a few blood stains on the carpet.
Which fighters do you pattern yourself after?
I’ve always tried to pick different things from different fighters to form my own style. I would say I like a mix of the all action warriors like Morales, Barrera and Duran. Mixed with the classy skills of Sugar Ray Leonard, De La Hoya and Roy Jones Jr.
Who are your favorite current or recent pro fighters?
My favourite current fights are Lomachenko, Canelo and Terrence Crawford.
Do you have a hidden talent?
I’m a certified Barista so I can whip up a pretty good coffee. Table tennis is also a big part of our training regime so I’m not bad on the table tennis table either.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
When I was about 7 years old me and both my brothers watched a movie called the Karate Kid. We begged our Mum to take us to learn Karate so eventually she did. We got about 10 minutes into the class and all three of us started crying and never went back. Now two of us fight for a living, who would have thought!
Who are your favorite pro sports teams and non-boxing athletes?
In the AFL (Australian rules football) I follow the Sydney Swans. Some athletes I like from other sports include Conor McGregor, Usain Bolt, Michael Jordan and Roger Federer.
What languages are you fluent in?
English
What’s your favorite movie?
Dumb and Dumber or Happy Gilmore
What’s your favorite TV show?
I really liked The Contender. I also like Jamie Oliver, I love my food.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Winners never quit & Quitters never win” -Vince Lombardi
What artists are most heavily featured on your playlist in camp?
Mainly Aussie rock bands in the gym like ACDC and Cold Chisel. Away from the gym I listen to a lot of podcast.
Do you have any superstitions or pre-fight rituals?
No superstitions or rituals. I think that sort of thing just plays with your head. I just train hard, prepare for anything and focus on winning.
Where do you want to be 5 years from now?
A superstar in boxing and undisputed World Champion.
If I wasn’t a professional boxer, I would be…
Before I was able to be a full-time professional boxer I did an apprenticeship in both Landscaping and Plumbing so I could have ended up doing either of them but I always knew I wanted to be a professional boxer. Every day that I was at work I was just thinking about boxing and wanted to be in the gym.
What or who is the biggest motivation in your life and why?
I have always been a very motivated person, everything that I’ve tried I have strived to be the best that I can be. 11 months ago my daughter Isla was born, she is my motivation now. I want to give her and my partner Jorja the best life possible.
