The Gamboa-Salido Undercard Features High-Wattage Star Power

On Saturday, Sept. 11, fans will get a glimpse into the future of boxing. The “BATTLE OF THE CHAMPIONS”undercard is that good.

“We understood the importance of the young prospects,” said Top Rank president Todd duBoef of the strategy behind structuring the undercard for YURIORKIS GAMBOA’s title unification bout with Orlando Salido. “This is like an all-star cast.”

Indeed, if fighters were actors, the director would have a tough time determining whom to cast in the lead role. Consider DIEGO MAGDALENO. He’s a native of Las Vegas, where the card’s venue, The Palms, is located and will draw a strong local following as a result.

“To get to fight at home-it’s fulfilling,” Magdaleno said. “I’m just ready to rock and roll.”

Another option for leading man status among Top Rank’s prospects is the Freddie Roach-trained JOSE BENAVIDEZ. The undefeated 18-year-old has knocked out seven opponents in seven fights and is poised for bigger and better things in the years to come. Yet he remains humble: “I wish everyone the best of luck,” he said.

“MATT KOROBOV,” said duBoef, ticking off another first-rate fighter in the early stages of his career, “is a special individual.” The Russian-born brawler has moved steadily up the ranks and maintained a perfect record that includes eight knock-outs.

Last but certainly not least in our hypothetical casting call is light heavyweight and recent Notre Dame graduate MIKE LEE. Though he’s only fought-and won-a single fight, Top Rank founder Bob Arum credits him with attracting a whole new fan base to boxing.

Just ask Notre Dame football legend-and the focus of his own Hollywood production-Rudy Ruettiger.  “Truthfully Michael should be on Wall Street, having a finance degree from Notre Dame. But he’s here to chase his dream,” said Ruettiger, adding, “I saw Michael fight at Notre Dame during the Bengal Bouts competition and he’s a very impressive young man. He wants to give back and is truly a philanthropist while competing as a professional.”

Said Lee: “I’m extremely excited to be fighting on this card. I’ve trained in Las Vegas in the past and visited here a couple of times, but it’s very humbling to be fighting here. I’m very grateful to my team: Ronnie Shields, Brian Caldwell, Creed Fountain and my father, all of whom have been extremely instrumental in my preparation.

“I’m also very grateful to have Rudy Ruettiger here for his support.”
