And Gamboa’s Next Challenger Is…

Lem Satterfield of Fanhouse writes:

“Top Rank’s Promotions’ Vice President Carl Moretti said that his promotional company would “absolutely” entertain a fight with WBA champion in recess, Chris John, of Indonesia, and, WBA king, Cuban-born, YURIORKIS GAMBOA  (pictured above, at right), of Miami, in accordance with a WBA organization mandate that the two fighters meet within 120 days from Sept. 11.

“Moretti’s company handles the 28-year-old Gamboa (19-0, 15 knockouts), a former Cuban Olympic gold medalist who is coming off of Saturday night’s unanimous decision victory over Orlando Salido (34-10-2, 22 KOs), which earned him the IBF crown.

“The 31-year-old John (43-0-2, 22 KOs) earned the vacant crown with a September, 2003, split-decision over Oscar Leon. John has since made 12 title defenses, and is coming off of September’s unanimous decision victory over Rocky Juarez in a rematch of their draw in February of 2009.

“‘We have no problem fighting the guy, Chris John, but you need a date to fight him on. So, that’s really the thing that we’re looking at is when is the next time that Gamboa could be on HBO,’ said Moretti.”
