Margarito at Home in Aguascalientes

This week in Aguascalientes the three-time welterweight world champion Antonio “Tony” Margarito, of Tijuana, was given a hero’s  welcome by the officials, fans and press of that city, as he came into town to announce his upcoming fight on May 8 during the final weekend of the month-long “Feria de San Marcos,” the largest and most famous fair in Mexico and all of Latin America.  

“As a kid growing up in Tijuana, we all knew how important and go big the fair was in Aguascalientes, so for me to be a part of this event is just great. I will give the fans the kind of fight they expect from me and the kind of fight that an event like this deserves. I know that only the top talent of entertainers perform here and now they will have a top-notch boxing card to go along with it,” said Margarito.  

MARGARITO WILL TAKE ON ROBERTO “LA AMENAZA” GARCIA in the main event of the big “Latin Fury 14” championship card promoted by Top Rank, Zanfer Promotions and Tecate and televised live from the Plaza de Toros Monumental de Aguascalientes on pay-per-view by Top Rank in the United States.  

“I have been away from the ring a long time, but I have been in the gym keeping fit and will be ready to go May 8th. I can’t wait to get into the ring once again,” said the fighter know as the “Tijuana Tornado.”  

During his visit to Aguascalientes, Margarito trained in the local gym operated by former world champion Alfonso Zamora, who gave the former champ a big welcome to his gym.   “I’m very happy to have Tony here and very happy to have him return to the ring during the fair. It’s a big event for boxing here. I have kids who want to be boxers, and when they have a chance to meet someone like Tony it motivates them to work harder in the gym,” said Zamora, a former WBA bantamweight champion who fought the likes of Carlos Zarate and Eusebio Pedroza and won his world championship at the Forum in Inglewood, California.  

Margarito took a lot of photos and signed many autographs after his long training session with his new trainer Robert Garcia, the former world champion from Oxnard, California. “It was a very difficult year for me, but I have to put in the pass. I feel like this is a new beginning for me and that I have to prove myself all over again. I had a lot of support from the fans everywhere I go and will make them proud of me once again,” said Margarito.  

The pay-per-view undercard will feature World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super featherweight champion Jorge Solis (38-2-2), of Guadalajara, Mexico, defending his title against top-10 contender and one-time world title challenger MARIO SANTIAGO (21-2-1, 14 KOs), of Ponce, Puerto Rico; undefeated NABF lightweight champion and top-five contender BRANDON RIOS (24-0-1, 17 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., defends his title against former interim world champion and fellow top-five contender Urbano Antillion (27-1, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., and the pay-per-view debut of flyweight sensation Alfonso López (3-0, 2 KOs), of Mexico City, Mexico, the son of legendary world champion and Mexican icon Ricardo López.
