Soto-Karass Has Unfinished Business with Jones

In his mind, welterweight contender JESUS SOTO-KARASShas no doubt he beat MIKE JONES last year at Cowboys Stadium. But he also knows that he will have to be better if wants to beat Jones when they meet this Saturday at the Mandalay Bay HBO.

“I expect MIKE JONES to be better, because I know that I will better,” said Soto-Karass, who is once again training in Los Angeles with Joe Goosen. “After you fight a guy, you know what to expect, and I think that will be the case Saturday night.”

In the first fight, Jones started very fast and had the lanky Soto-Karass, Sinaloa, Mexico, in big trouble in the second round. After three, Jones had built up a big lead. But he seemed to loose steam in the middle and later rounds, and Soto-Karass, through sheer guts and determination, battled back. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the judges, who gave the nod to Jones in a controversial decision.

“I am not the only one who thought I won the fight. A lot people did. And I think that is why we’re doing the rematch, because not only was it a good fight, but the wrong guy got the decision,” said Soto-Karass.

Prior to the loss to Jones, Soto-Karass had been on a 15-fight winning streak. Then, in November 2009, he was finally stopped by Alfonso Gomez. After that, Soto-Karass suffered another disappointment, when, in May 2009, he was in a no contest bout against Gabriel Martinez.

Said Soto Karass: “It has been kind of tough the last the few fights, but I feel that I am ready to get going again, and this fight with Jones is very important to my career. Things happen for a reason, and I feel that all this adversity lately has made me more determined the ever.”

Welterweights Jesus Sotto-Karass and MIKE JONES fight Saturday, Feb. 19 in Las Vegas on the undercard of the FERNANDO MONTIEL-Nonito Donaire bantamweight title fight. Both bouts will be broadcast on HBO After Dark beginning at 9:45 p.m. EST.
