Round Up: Pacquiao Wins by Unanimous Decision
WORLD WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Champion MANNY PACQUIAO VS. SHANE MOSLEY
MAY 7TH, MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas
FIGHT: Champion MANNY PACQUIAO, 53-3-2, 38 KOs, General Santos, Philippines v. SUGAR SHANE MOSLEY, 46-6-1, 39 KOs, Pomona, Ca.
DIVISION: World Welterweight Championship
RESULT: Pacquiao Wins By Unanimous Decision
DETAIL: Despite that both Mosley and Pacquiao are both known as offensive fighters, only one showed up tonight ready to do sustained damage: the champ. While Mosley put together the occasional combination, the fact is that, after Pacquiao knocked him down with a right in the third round, he rarely fired off more than one punch.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, let his hands go at every opportunity — especially after Mosley shoved him to the canvas in the 10th. The ref ruled it a knock down, but the replay showed it was an obvious push. At any rate, Pacquiao responded with violence, catching Mosley as often as he could with whip-fast combos.
Perhaps out of frustration at Mosley’s unwillingness to exchange, Pacquiao occasionally stutter-stepped in an attempt to throw Mosley off balance. It was just one more example of Pacquiao’s commitment to giving fans a fight.
In the final two rounds, Pacquiao repeatedly rocked Mosley with brutal lefts and rights. The crowd leapt to its feet and roared its approval, as Mosley retreated in full-on survival mode.
The judges scored it 119-108, 120-108, and 120-107.
